Comiston Drive, Edinburgh
Located in the Plewlands Conservation Area in Morningside, Comiston Drive is a Victorian two storey mid terraced dwelling. The smart dressed red sandstone façade to the north is complemented by the rubble rear facade and extensive south facing gardens are flanked with mature woodland leading down to a stream.
Our clients brief was to create an open plan kitchen dining and family area that opened onto the garden. The proposals included partial removal of the existing outshot and the erection of a single storey extension, simple and contemporary in form and appearance. The flat zinc roof which wraps around the side elevation provides the main structure to the new addition. A red sandstone ashlar box and the glazing elements are then simply inserted into this. The full height bi-fold doors have been pushed back into the floor plate providing a small covered terrace and solar shading.
The floating zinc roof sails over the frameless high level clerestory glazing, providing an element of elegance and luxury to this modest family extension.
